"I don't consider myself to be a stylist. I am a wardrobe consultant; that is my ministry and this is my calling."
Melvin Jefferson of Forestdale, AL is a well traveled cosmopolitan of style. Many, from the likes of local CEO's, to the CEO's of the New York Yankees and the Brooklyn Nets have solicited the service's of this style icon. I am not using the term "icon" loosely at all, as I am confident that this young man is an undiscovered patron of the "tailored" arts!
Jeffersons' love for fashion flourished early on in childhood, as he traded video games and toy's, for cashmere pea coats. At the youthful age of 12, when most boys were mastering tricks on their Diamond Bar bikes, Melvin was mastering the craft of various tie knots. His concept of the dapper male was molded by his father (a CPA), and legendary designer, Ralph Lauren.
Jefferson visits nostalgia and remembers his early style inspirations. He recalls watching his father get ready for work in the morning and loved the routine of putting on a full suit and applying the various accessories, peice by peice. He admired how well his father's suits fit his build, and used to go with him to have them tailored to his custom fit. Thus, his inspiration to first go into tailoring before getting into styling.
Upon high school graduation, Melvin enrolled in college as a pre med student, with plans to go into the pharmaceutical industry. Less than two years into his studies, he realized there was no way he could tolerate even one more semester of the mundane campus life; so he spent some time soul searching, trying to discover whether he could really make a career out of doing what he loves, FASHION!
Jefferson did his research on the industry and weighed his options. One of his principle rules in fashion that he is non compromising on, is "the perfect fit". In order for him to be able to properly "fit" his clients, he would need to learn the craft of tailoring. So he reached out to a leading light in the Birmingham tailoring world, Ms. Sonya Gardner, whom allowed him to apprentice/work under her for four years.
In 2012, Melvin became a wardrobe consultant for Saks Fifth Avenue, Birmingham. He made lots of connections there, and built quite an impressive clientèle. A few years later he had the grounding to start his own business, and started revamping closets in upper crest communities like Greystone and Ross Bridge (in Birmingham, AL) to Bankhead, ATL, and Manhattan, New York.
Jefferson is in the middle stages of curating his fashion label and signature style. His designs will have the elegance of Italian fashioners, with world class vintage appeal. Let's face it, Melvin was born to be a fashion icon! The maker of staple fashion pieces, and the wardrobe consultant responsible for the fine collection of garments acquired for the socially elite.
During our interview, Melvin disclosed plans to travel to Italy to attend the 'Pitti Uomo 87' Men's fashion week events. In Part 2 of this savvy exclusive, he will give me an in depth recount of his experience in Italy, as well as an inside peek at some of his one of a kind peices by his line, 'Ralpheal Renee'. #StayTuned!
