The Year of the Grind: Part 1
Welcome to #TheYearOfTheGrind
If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably been setting New Year’s resolutions since your late teens. And if you and I are really a lot alike, you’ve probably set and failed at several bouts of “New Year’s Transformations” too! The #1 reason why we fall off track with our NYR’s so quickly is because we don’t map out exactly what we want to do, or how we’re going to do it. Myself included. Year after year, I’ve made laundry lists of bucket lists, declarations, and sound resolutions, but would drop the ball a few weeks later once the goal was out of sight-out of mind.
I couldn’t see the bigger picture because I had yet to paint the entire portrait.
I’d get bored with the goal because I’d lose sight on how or when I’ll reach it.
I’d get confused with my vision and lose focus on my direction.
I’d get sidetracked by new ambitions, because I’d become stagnant in the previous ones.
I’d become complacent with the mild success of a few steps, and rest on those efforts.
TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT-
So this year I’m trying something different- I’m mapping out my vision, then I’m going to map out its course! This way, I’ll have a clear and concise map of what my grind looks like to reference. I’ve been giving this a lot of thought, and I have been reading up on life hacks for how to get sh*t done. Not to mention the awesome mentoring of our blogging guru’s! #Mattieology has been giving me life for months now, as she continually drops knowledge bombs day after day! She is the Queen of #Slayage and has inspired me, greatly. So now it’s #GrindTime! Time to take her tips, and those of my blogging predecessors and PUT IN WORK!
MAKE IT WORK FOR YOU-
All the while the teachings of others will help set you on the right track, you still have to fine tune and develop a route that works for you. The Year of the Grind, Circa 2016 is all about that and has no AM or PM time stamps. Not even days of the week. Yep, you read me! I can’t determine the days or hours that will work for your lifestyle. Only you know what days and time slots to execute your grind.
HERE’S HOW THE FORMULA CAME TO ME-
In most industries there are numbers involved in the day to day running of the business. Figures, department totals, inventory, occupancy, losses, gains, etcetera; and all these weekly/monthly statistics are usually broken down into itemized reports at a glance. In retail, we start every week with a sales meeting and we analyze the numbers from the previous week. This allows us to set sales goals appropriate for the business requirements of the new week; as well as plans to make up for any missed opportunities of the previous week.
I’ve been in high end retail for years, and if I haven’t learned anything from that line of work; I’ve learned how to create actionable game plans to submit to corporate. And they don’t want long drawn out excuses or stories, only plans for execution. A concise, outlined, map at a glance where they can see that we have regrouped and are prepared for the days ahead.
HERE’S WHEN THE LIGHT BULB LIT UP FOR ME-
I was sitting in one of those weekly meetings, and was thinking about how circa 2016 was going to be the year of the grind for me. So as I was half listening to the discussion going on around me, they passed out the week a glance reports. I started reviewing it, and then thought to myself- It’d be awesome if I could see my year-long grind at a glance! That’d take all the guessing work out of determining the “business needs” of my weekly grind. Hmm…maybe I should take these concepts and see how I can make it applicable to goal setting my vision plan. Aaaaaand voila` #TheYearOfTheGrind was born!
NOW I’M GOING TO SHOW YOU HOW TO DEVELOP YOUR GRIND AT A GLANCE!
First you have to write your vision and leave nothing out. Be realistic with your goals or realistic with yourself about your work ethic, and determine what you want to accomplish this year. Try to do this with the idea in mind, that you want your vision to equate to 12 goals that will complete one major goal. After that, extract the actual goals from the vision and break them into 12 grinds. Reference the formula below!
HERE’S THE FORMULA-
1 YEAR = 12 MONTHS
12 MONTHS = 12 GRINDS
12 GRINDS = 1 GRIND PER MONTH
1 GRIND / 4 WEEKS = 4 MINI GRINDS
4 MINI GRINDS / 4 WEEKS = 1 MINI GRIND PER WEEK
4 MINI GRINDS = 1 FULL GRIND
Now that we know the most crucial concept to accomplishing a goal is to have a road map, now t’s time to create the map! I attended a vision planning workshop hosted by the #SeeJaneWrite network, led by True North Business Development founder, Lois Weinblatt and was able to see how to construct a vision plan.
So I went straight home and began to paint the portrait of what I envisioned my life to be. That’s when I realized it would take more than 1 year to achieve the overall success and evolution of my imaginary life lol. That’s when I discovered I would have to break it down by years; i.e., #Circa2016.
Sometimes in order to accomplish an overall goal, you have to accomplish a couple smaller goals first; or employ an entirely diferent strategy that leads up to the completion of the major ambition. That’s where the phases come into play! Each phase will be sought out every year; and every year will be a new #YearofTheGrind.
