BLACK MEN'S MENTAL HEALTH: Change Your Mindset- Invest in Life Experiences, Not Material Things!
By Aaron (Ace Boogie) Smith
What’s up L.C.P., Aceboogie here with a weekly word!
It is my intention to offer a different style of thinking to those of you whom may be curious enough to listen to another point of view. Now for some this may simply be an affirmation to your own thought process but I'm speaking to those of you who may feel stuck in a circle that just doesn't have the capacity for your mindset. This is for the "dreamers" if you will, or maybe you've even been called a stoner, or delusional.....u choose the vernacular. For those of u who have already began to exercise your minds, allow me to perhaps shed some light on some obstacles that may arise when you start putting your newfound mindset to use.
I am not trying to bore you to death with endless babble but rather help someone that may be on the verge of a breakthrough, by telling my story. I wondered to myself, what is the best way to get my agenda across? What do the people need? How can I help out without coming across as conceited? Besides, who am i to give advice or insight? Im simply a child of "The Most High" that was brave enough to step out on faith; and from past life experiences I've realized........... that's enough!
My life has changed drastically in the past few years and I am by no means naive to the fact that this was not by mere chance or without hard work. I was blessed withthis platform to share what God has brought me through. If you have read this post this far, than I must have some sense of charisma that drew you in, and made you want to listen or at least see what I have to say. That charisma simply comes from the excitement inside of me that stems from understanding that living our dreams REALLY IS POSSIBLE. Scratch that ANYTHING is possible!
By now a lot of you may be saying, "whatever, this ninja is sounding like an infomercial". I get it, I would too. But aye, I'm a brother from racist ole, Imean the wonderful ole, sweet home Alabama, and I love my state but it is what it is, y'all know! Sorry, not everyone is racist...I know, I but I digress; I only can speak on dream chasingbecause I'm living proof that it can happen. The hardest part for me was standing up to the fearful, doubtful, and apprehensive voices that were in my head telling me I couldn't do it. No matter how big you dream those negative voices will always be there to distract you. The ironic part is that listening to your inner voice is a skill that must be honed and mastered to change your situation. The key is deciding which voices you choose to listen to.
If you want be different you must think differently. The best way to see your dreams growing into a reality is by watering those positive thoughts and throwing weed killer on the negative ones. It is only at that moment that with God's help, you can stand up to fear and push through your comfort zone. I always say comfort zones are prisons! Until you ruffle your feathers you will never know if you can fly.
SO WHY TRAVEL?
To me, I am living my dreams when I feel most alive, and am experiencing life with my senses fully engaged. Dreams are sensed with our heart. When our visions are brought into reality we are able to sense them with all 5 senses.
I smelled my dreams when I visited a Venetian glass company in Venice and I smelled the molten glass. I touched my dreams when I felt the stones of the pyramids of Giza. I heard my dreams when I took a tuk tuk to my room in the middle of a forrest in the Phillipines and heard thousands of frogs chirping all around me at once.
Everyday truly is a blessing to take in God’s wonder and I have realized this first hand. I experience death more than most in my line of work and you will never appreciate life more than when you see someone loose their own or come close to loosing your lifeand I have done both.
Many people may think traveling is this expensive lucrative creature that is reserved only for the elite, when in actuality it is more affordable than you think. For my brothers back home BUYING the newest Jordan's to impress that special lady….Those SHOES can easily be a PLANE ticket to Miami or NY or ANOTHER tropical location. Now I understand that some "women" these days are checking your footwork and screening you accordingly, but what if I told you that I know what it feels like to be Chris Brown? Not because of my shoes but simply because I am me, an African American male in a foreign land! Just by setting foot in a country where brothers from the states quite frankly are never around, my blackness is appreciated; and my worth is not based on how much I spent on my clothes. Nor am I scorned for being myself! The closest some of these people have been to a black man from the south is Youtube! I cannot make this stuff up lol. Now, I by no means intend on having your sole purpose of travel be in search of women, but rather to enlighten you, and change your perspective on material things. Maybe you choose to buy shoes or whatever your vice is because that is what makes you happy? Or is it the happy feeling you get from being socially accepted? Hmmm, I simply want to propose the question of WHY? Are you basing your happiness on attaining material “things” or by adhering to social standards? Let me be the first to tell you that social standards are only relative depending on what social circle you choose to be a part of and those circles are different everywhere you go. Ask yourself what genuinely makes YOU satisfied? What makes YOU happy? What is YOUR passion? Why do you SPEND your hard earned money on these THINGS?
I decided a long time ago to STOP INVESTING my hard earned MONEY on “THINGS” and began to INVEST in “EXPERIENCES”. To me experiences ENHANCE our most valuable asset, LIFE.
Have you been inspired to travel? What material things are you willing to pass on to experience God's green earth? Life is about more than acquiring and accumulating THINGS. Invest in the enrichment of your life, PASS on some of those MATERIAL items, and INVEST in an EXPERIENCE that will last a lifetime! BLACK MEN, life is about MORE than women, clothes, cars, and jewels. What experiences and wisdom will you pass down to your children? Sound off in the comments!
