"The Mighty Bison" The Best School in The South!

Welcome….. L.C.P. I welcome you to the land of the mighty bison! I believe that

by bringing “Herd” energy back, it will start another wave of success in the south.

The south; where we as blacks show the essence of what it means to be black.

From the 1900’s to the new millennium, The Bison nation is the most successful

nation!

During the year of 1899, some black citizens of Birmingham decided to call a

historical mass meeting. The purpose of it was to draw up a petition requesting

the Board of Education to create a tax supported school for blacks. Dr. W. R.

Pettiford, president of the Alabama Penny Savings Bank, a Black owned financial

institution, and Mrs. B. H. Hudson, an employee of the bank, were the leading

forces in the effort.

Dr. Samuel Ullman chairman of the Board of Education encouraged and

supported the idea, and in the summer of 1900, the board established the high

school. Upon recommendation of the school superintendent, the Board appointed

Arthur Harold Parker to serve as the principal and only teacher of the new school

which was to be known as Negro High School.

A modest "high school" for blacks with Arthur Harold Parker as its first principal,

opened with 18 students in Birmingham. Parker had been born to former slaves.

In 1939 D. Arthur Harold Parker retired after serving for fifty years. The school,

which had been known as Negro High and Industrial High, was named A. H.

Parker High School in his honor.

When Parker retired on the eve of WWII it was the largest high school for blacks

in the world, known for producing unusually large numbers of exceptional

competent graduates. In 2011, Parker High School moved into a new facility

designed with the 21st century in mind, thus renewing the legacy of Dr. Arthur

Harold Parker, the founding principle and teacher of a dream made real. Our

alumni may be found in the highest levels of industry. We call ourselves the

"Thundering Herd". Commissioned by the Birmingham Board of Education.

The school also became noted for its industrial education, band, and

spirited renditions from its choir. The power of the “Thundering Herd”

came forth across the world!! Some of Parker Highs most notable

graduates are: Nell Carter-Singer/Actress, Erskine Hawkins- Musician, Buck Buchanan-Pro Football Hall of Famer, and Eric Bledsoe- NBA Basketball Player
